Maggie Stiefvater was born Heidi Hummel^[1] on November 18, 1981, in Harrisonburg, Virginia. At 16, she legally changed her first name to Margaret.^[2] As a child, Stiefvater was a voracious reader who enjoyed writing.^[3] By age 16, she was submitting manuscripts to publishers.^[3] After being home-schooled from sixth grade on,^[4] Stiefvater attended Mary Washington College, graduating with a B.A.
