Wilhelm Maybach was born on February 9, 1846, in Heilbronn, a small town in the state of Baden-Württemberg, Germany.

His father worked as a carpenter, but at the age of ten, Wilhelm became an orphan and was taken in by a pastor named Werner. He began his technical education at the age of fifteen at a machine factory in Reutlingen, where he worked during the day and studied drafting and natural sciences in the evenings.
He also taught himself English and studied technical mechanics extensively.
In 1863, Gottlieb Daimler became the technical director at the factory where Maybach worked. After three years, Daimler invited Maybach to join him in Karlsruhe, where he became the technical director of the Deutz company.
